Student-teacher: Ecem Nur
Okul
Learning Stage of Class: 8th Grade
Age Level / Grade of Class: 13-14
Size of Class: 30
Time: 40 minutes
AGE GROUP : 13-14
LEVEL OF PROFICIENCY : Intermediate
LESSON TITLE : Future Tense

DURATION : 40 minutes
TEXTBOOK : -
EQUIPMENT NEEDED : Time machine from cartoon, pictures
from future, letters
|
OBJECTIVES/GOALS:
1. Students will be able to
write a short text expressing their future..
2. Students will be able to
describe in simple terms their future.
3. Students will be able to
use ‘will’ to make spontaneous decisions, predict about future, give a
promise for future.
4. Students will be able to
create their own sentences by using ‘will’.
5. Students will be able to
distinguish between present and future events.
|
INTRODUCTION: (How will you introduce the
teaching skill/concept?)
Aim: Make the students understand the meaning
of future by asking questions and talking about future actions.
Time: 5 minutes
Teacher starts the lesson by asking
questions to students about Tv serials and talks about one of the Tv serials,
‘’Doctor who’’. Teacher uses the time machine which is placed in the serial
to talk about future.
|
STAGES OF THE LESSON:
1. Lead-in
(introduction): Aim: Present the future tense through a text. Time: 2-3 minutes Aids: Time machine from cartoon and letters. Teacher gives students a letter that includes time traveller’s adventure in the future. Teacher reads the text to students. Then teacher and students talk about it
2. Elicitation:
Aim: to elicit the function of the future from the students using concept questions.
Time:
2-3 minutes; interactive patterns: T-S
Guide
the students toward the new tense and its function through the following
concept questions:
T: Does
Matt Smith travel to future?
S: Yes.
T:
Which year?
S: 2100
T: Are
there flying cars in the future?
S: Yes.
T: Are
there flying cars now?
S: No.
T:Will
we have robots in future?
S:Yes
T: Do
we have robots now?
S: No.
T: Do
we see these kinds of animals now?
S: No.
T:Great.
So, in this letter, Matt Smith tells us
about some of things that he sees in the future. While we are talking
about actions or things that starts in the future, we use ‘will’. We call
this tense ‘the future tense’. ( Write the name on the board)
3. Explanation:
Teacher hangs the timeline to the board. Then
teacher gives three usages of ‘will’ (
Prediction, promise, spontaneous speech) with examples. Teacher explains
forms of will (positive, negative and question forms). Teacher gives the
future time expressions by hanging the cards that are written time
expressions on the timeline. Then teacher makes sentences using the cards on
the board.
4. Accurate reproduction (controlled practice):
Aim: to check students’ comprehension about
the text including future tense.
Time: 5 minutes
Teacher gives worksheets to each students
that includes a dialogue and asks students to read and answer the questions.
Then teacher talks to students about their answer.
5. Guided practice (semi-controlled) :
Aim: To make sentences by using ‘will’ and
correct word.
Time:5 minutes
Teacher gives students worksheets. In the
worksheet, there are ten sentences and there are blanks in the sentences.
Teacher wants students to fill in the blanks with the correct words from the
word box by using ‘’ will’’.
6. Immediate creativity (free practice) :
Aim:
to make predictions using ‘will’.
Time: 10 minutes
Teacher divides the class into groups of 9 or 10 and
asks students to sit in a circle. Teacher tells the students that they are going to practice
writing predictions about their classmates using ‘will’. Teacher gives a copy
of the worksheet to each student and tells them to write their name at the
top. Also, Teacher tells them to write a year
in future and write this at the top of the worksheet. Students then
fold their paper, so the name and year cannot be seen and pass the paper to
the student on their right. Then teacher demonstrates the activity, asks the
students to look at the first section (Home) and elicit ideas for completing the
sentence, e.g. You will live in a mansion / a big house / a small condo / a
hut, etc.
Students
complete the sentence, and then fold the paper so their sentence is hidden
and pass it to the student on their right. This process continues until the
worksheet has been completed. Then, students give the paper back to the
person whose name is at the top of the worksheet.
Teacher
has the students read their predictions to the group and tells the students
to discuss the predictions and decide who will have the most interesting
life. Then get feedback from around the class.
CLOSURE : Teacher makes repetition the forms of ‘will’ and summarize the lesson.
CONTINGENCY PLAN : Teacher asks the students
to travel to future with a time machine and write a letter from the future.
