INTRODUCTION:
WARM UP:
Aim; understanding form of the regular verbs in the simple past tense
First of all, teacher comes to the class and says “Good morning, how are you today?”
STAGES OF THE LESSON:
1)      Lead-in (introduction):

The teacher tries to use visual materials and shows pictures of the Simpson family and asks “Do you know the Simpsons?” and students says “yes/no”. The teacher introduces members of the Simpsons family and says their names (Homer Simpson, Marge Simpson, Bart  Simpson, Maggie Simpson, Lisa Simpson). Then she shows what they did last week by using pictures. However, firstly she asks by using the pictures “what do you see?” and the students says “do homework, study, listen video, etc.” After the teacher sticks these pictures to the board and says the sentences by using the simple past tense.

2)      Elicitation: Teacher writes sentences of the pictures descriptions one by one by pointing out the related picture:
        Homer Simpson:
Ø  He watched film last week
Marge Simpson:
Ø  She listened music last week
Lisa Simpson:
Ø  She studied English last week
Bart Simpson:
Ø  He finished his homework last week
Maggie Simpson:
She learned vocabulary last week

3)      Explanation:
The teacher determines one of them target sentence that she uses before and explains the use of the simple past tense by explaining the meaning of the target sentence.
The target sentences: She studied English.
It means:
ü  She doesn’t study all the time
ü  She isn’t studying now
Concept check question:
ü  Does she study all the time?
ü  Is she studying now?

Grammatical explanation:
We use the simple past tense in a specific time.
The simple past tense expresses completed actions.
4. Accurate reproduction (controlled practice):
Teacher uses oral drills to practice and provides the students to repeat. The teacher says target sentence and wants to repeat as a whole class or as a half. Thus, they practice at least 5 times (whispering, fast, slowly, …).
Ø  She studied English
5. Guided practice (semi-controlled):  Teacher shows the positive form of the simple past tense by using substitution table.  She makes correct sentences by reading from left to right and choosing one word from each column. Then she says the sentences again and the students repeat them. She provides to the students to practice. For instance, she removes the column about verbs or leaves spaces in a column in the substitution table.

6) PRACTICE

Substitution Drills: The teacher gives importance to pronunciation and says a sentence and repeats the sentence. After that she says a word, the students change the sentence correctly.
For example:  Teacher: I studied English.
                          Students: I studied English.
                          Teacher: Math
                          Students: I studied Math.
Miming an action:
The students are given cards by the teacher. There are some action verbs on them. The students must mime well and the other students must guess these verbs. For instance, a student mimes “study”.  The teacher asks” what do you see?” and the other students says “You studied.”
And then the teacher tells students “thank you very much, you are perfect!” If the students have any difficulty, the teacher helps them warmly.

CLOSURE: The teacher makes a short summary in terms of remembering. Then, she finishes the lesson.

CONTINGENCY PLAN: The teacher gives written exercise. The students try to find correct forms of the verbs for each sentence.
For example: You listening/ listens/ listened English video.
                          They finished/ finishing/ finishes homework.
