Topic: The Storytelling/ The Thirsty Boy /Emotions
Materials: Scissors, crayons, pictures, flashcards, glue, sticks
Aim of the Lesson: To enable learners to practice and develop listening skill by telling a story and to practice target vocabulary by developing listening, comprehension, and concentration skills.
OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to
- identify new words (thirsty, happy, scared, anxious, angry, good, moody, sleepy, upset, jug, climb, climb down) in target language
- recognize emotions.
- express their ideas by using simple form of the language
LESSON PROCEDURE
WARM-UP 2’
The teacher greets the students and asks some questions ‘It’s snowy. Do you like winter? Do you like summer? What do you do in summer? Etc. Okay, now close your eyes and imagine that it’s summer. You are in a forest and it is very hot. What do you do? ’ Students do brainstorming and answer the questions. The teacher makes students ready for the lesson.
PRE STAGE 15’
The teacher shows the pictures of a boy and says that they will listen to a story about him. The teacher introduces new vocabulary items in the story by showing the pictures of them on the board one by one. After that, the teacher repeats new vocabulary items with the students for comprehension. And teacher distributes vocabulary check worksheets to each student. Students are asked to write words under pictures. When they finish, teacher checks the answers with them. Then the teacher asks students to make an art craft activity, and explains what students will do. Teacher gives the pictures and sticks. Teacher asks students to cut the pictures, color and paste them on sticks by demonstrating his/her puppet which are prepared beforehand. The teacher gives students 5 minutes. Students make their puppets by looking at teacher’s puppet.
WHILE STAGE 10’
After they finish their art-craft activity, the teacher says “Now it’s story time!’’. The teacher gives worksheets to the students and says “I want you to answer the questions.” Then the teacher starts telling the story and asks students to listen to the story carefully. After the storytelling, the teacher checks students’ answers in front of the class. Then the teacher tells the story for the second time. The teacher gives the instructions. The teacher gives an example.
POST STAGE 13’
After second telling of the story, teacher gives comprehension check worksheets. The students answer the questions individually. After that activity, teacher checks the answers with students. Teacher gives new worksheets to each student. It is a kind of activity related to previous course. They try to ask and answer about how they feel in some conditions. After that teacher summarizes the lesson by showing the items that they learned in the lesson.
CONTINGENCY PLAN
The aim of the lesson is to teach emotions. Thus they play "Missing Flashcard Guess’’ to internalize the vocabulary items. With the flashcards on the board, teacher tells everyone to close and cover their eyes. And she removes a card and holds it behind her back. She tells everyone to open their eyes and shout out the missing flashcard. S/he does this for the other cards at a quick pace.
